OS X El Capitan
Engineered to take full advantage of your Mac hardware, OS X El Capitan is designed to be as easy to use as it is beautiful to look at. It comes with an amazing collection of apps you'll use — and love — every day. And it enables your Mac and iOS devices to work wonderfully together.

A full-size keyboard.

In a fraction of the space.

We believe that a comfortable, full-size keyboard is essential for a great notebook experience. But to fit one into the elegantly thin new MacBook, we had to completely rethink how a keyboard is engineered and constructed. To create the new keyboard, we redesigned each key and its underlying mechanism — not only making the whole keyboard much thinner, but also allowing for more comfortable, precise, and responsive typing that just feels right.

Retina re-envisioned.

The moment you open the new MacBook, its gorgeous 12‑inch Retina display with edge-to-edge glass brings everything into focus. Every photo leaps off the screen in rich, vibrant detail. Over 3 million pixels render each letter with crystal clarity. And it all comes to light on the thinnest, most energy-efficient Retina display ever on a Mac, meticulously honed to deliver a bold visual experience within an impossibly minimal design.

The trackpad, pushed even further with Force Touch.

With the new MacBook comes a whole new way to experience a trackpad. The Force Touch trackpad is engineered to deliver a responsive, uniform click no matter where you press the surface. And underneath, force sensors detect how much pressure you’re applying and give you new ways to interact with your Mac. You can now use a Force click to enable new capabilities, like quickly looking up the definition of a word or previewing a file just by clicking and continuing to press on the trackpad. You’ll also experience haptic feedback — a tactile vibration from the trackpad that adds the sense of touch to what you see on the screen. These advanced capabilities work in addition to all the intuitive Multi-Touch gestures Mac users love. You’ll be more in touch with your Mac than ever before. Without lifting a finger.

Fully equipped for a wireless world.

The new MacBook is designed to fit effortlessly into our increasingly wireless world. Just about anything you do with a notebook can now be done over the air, thanks to Apple software that takes full advantage of the latest Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth wireless technology. So no matter where you are, you can connect to the web, transfer files, organize your photos, listen to music, and more — without being tied down.

The most efficient way to charge a notebook is by connecting a charger to a port. And as long as we were going to include a port for charging the new MacBook, we wanted to make sure it was the most advanced and versatile one available. The new USB‑C port puts just about everything you need in a port all in one place. This amazing port provides charging, speedy USB 3 data transfer, and video output in a small, reversible design that’s one-third the size of the current USB port.

Quietly astonishing.

The new MacBook has been engineered from the ground up for silent, efficient performance. It starts with a fifth-generation Intel Core M processor that runs on just 5 watts of power, made even more efficient by optimizations throughout OS X. Together the processor and OS X sip so little energy that the system generates very little heat, so no fan is required to cool the computer. That means when your MacBook is working, you won’t hear a thing. And the logic board on which the processor sits has been completely redesigned to pack all the capability you expect in a Mac into as little space as possible.

All-day battery life.

All-new design.

We know people rely on Apple notebooks for all-day battery life, regardless of how compact they are. And with the slim new MacBook enclosure, all-day battery life simply would not be achievable using traditional rectangular batteries. So we developed our own unique battery technology specifically designed to make use of every last millimeter of available space. The result is a terraced, contoured battery design that not only fits perfectly inside the incredibly slim MacBook, but also is unlike anything seen before in a notebook.

OS X

OS X is the operating system that powers everything you do on a Mac. With OS X El Capitan, it’s simple to do amazing things and delightful to do all the everyday things. And it works seamlessly with your apps and iOS devices.

Built-in Apps

Every Mac comes with apps for creativity and apps for productivity. It also comes with a collection of great apps for things you do every day, like surfing the web, sending mail and messages, and organizing your calendar. It even comes with an app for finding new apps. Your Mac is more than full‑featured, it’s fully loaded.

Design

Pure invention.

We designed the new MacBook to be not only thinner and lighter, but more functional and intuitive than ever before. To do that, we couldn’t just shave a millimeter here, a gram there. So we started from scratch, reinventing each essential element as part of a singular, deceptively simple design. It’s everything there is to love about Mac. In its purest form ever.

A keyboard reimagined from A to Z.

From the beginning, our goal was to design a full, uncompromising Mac experience. And a full-size keyboard is an essential part of that. In order to fit a full-size keyboard in the incredibly thin MacBook, we designed the keyboard from the ground up. Each component has been rethought specifically for the new MacBook, from the underlying mechanism to the curvature of the surface of each key to the distinctive new typeface. The result is a keyboard dramatically thinner than its predecessor. Now when your finger strikes the key, it goes down and bounces back with a crisp, consistent motion that makes typing with precision a breeze.

Butterfly mechanism

Traditional keyboards use a scissor mechanism, which tends to wobble around the edges. This creates a lack of precision when you strike anywhere except the center of the key. We needed to reduce key wobbling for a keyboard this thin; otherwise, striking a key off-center could result in the keycap hitting bottom before a keystroke registers. So we designed an entirely new butterfly mechanism, which is wider than the scissor mechanism and has a single assembly made from a stiffer material — allowing for a more stable, responsive key that takes up less vertical space. This innovative design improves stability, uniformity, and control — no matter where you press on the key.

Key design

The redesigned keys on the new MacBook feature a larger surface area, a thinner construction, and a deeper curvature, creating a more defined space for your fingertip to naturally find and press the keys. These refinements may be subtle, but the feel is distinct and intuitive. Combined with the butterfly mechanism, this new design allows for much greater control when typing.

Precision backlighting

When we set out to design an incredibly thin keyboard, one of the first things we considered was how to backlight the keys in a way that took up less space while delivering an even cleaner and more refined look and feel. To do that, we removed the row of LEDs and the light guide panel that distributed light throughout the keyboard and instead placed an individual LED under each key. These LEDs are calibrated for uniform brightness, so every key and character looks clear and sharp with minimal light around the keycap. All while being engineered for as much energy efficiency as possible.

3 million pixels.
0.88 millimeter. Razor sharp.

The 12-inch Retina display on the new MacBook isn’t just picture perfect — it’s also paper thin. In fact, at just 0.88 millimeter, it’s the thinnest Retina display ever on a Mac. A specially developed automated manufacturing process forms the impossibly thin edge-to-edge glass that’s only 0.5 millimeter thick. And we reduced the space between display components for a tighter, more integrated design.

To deliver the gorgeous Retina experience on the sleek new MacBook, we had to innovate on every level, right down to the pixel. So we redesigned the pixels to create a larger aperture, allowing more light to pass through. This enabled us to use LED backlighting that’s 30 percent more energy efficient than the Retina display on any other Mac notebook, yet still achieve the same level of vivid brightness.

The Force Touch trackpad.
Press a little deeper, do a lot more.

The new Force Touch trackpad may look like other trackpads on the surface, but underneath it’s unlike anything that’s existed before. Force sensors detect how much pressure you’re applying, and the new Taptic Engine provides a click sensation when you press anywhere on the surface. Now the click that once was a single, mechanical function is just the start of what you can do with Force Touch. The sensory capabilities of the Force Touch trackpad allow you to tell your MacBook what you want it to do based on subtle differences in the amount of pressure you apply. This makes it possible to perform a variety of different actions in different apps, all on the same surface. And it can respond with haptic feedback you can actually feel, making your MacBook more usable and personal than ever before.

Taptic Engine

Traditional trackpads use a “diving board” mechanism, which requires room underneath for the downward motion of a click and makes it harder to click the part of the surface closest to the keyboard. With the Force Touch trackpad, force sensors detect your click anywhere on the surface and move the trackpad laterally toward you, although the feel is the same familiar downward motion you’re accustomed to in a trackpad. The Taptic Engine also provides haptic feedback, so instead of just seeing what’s happening on the screen, you can feel it, too. The trackpad sends a tangible response to your fingertip when you perform certain tasks, like aligning annotations on a PDF.

Force Touch

In addition to the intuitive Multi-Touch gestures you may be familiar with — like scrolling, swiping, pinching, and rotating — Force Touch brings a new dimension to the Mac experience. The sensitivity is customizable, allowing you to adjust how much pressure is needed to register a click. And the trackpad can even tell whether you’re clicking with your thumb or another finger and automatically adjusts the sensitivity level.

Force click

Click and continue to press on the trackpad to enable new capabilities, like looking up the definition of a word, previewing a file in the Finder, or creating a new Calendar event when you Force click a date in the text of an email.

Accelerators

Gradually add pressure to the trackpad to vary the speed with which you fast-forward through a QuickTime movie or zoom in on a location in Maps.

Pressure-sensitive drawing

Press lightly for a thin stroke or harder for a thick one when marking up a Mail attachment or creating a signature for forms in Preview.

We squeezed the most into it.
And out of it.

Each component inside the new MacBook has been meticulously designed to get the most out of an incredibly thin and light enclosure. We started with an amazingly efficient processor, coupled with fast Intel HD Graphics 5300, and optimized OS X to draw on the processor using as little power as possible. Because no fan is needed to cool the new MacBook, it runs silently and without any moving parts, and it has more room for battery cells to provide all-day performance.

Processor

Inside the new MacBook you’ll find the fifth-generation Intel Core M “Broadwell” processor — the first chip designed with 14-nanometer process technology. This means that the chip is packed with more transistors than the previous generation for higher density and more efficient performance. The Core M processor is the perfect fit for the new MacBook, combining energy efficiency with the performance needed to handle everyday tasks.

Fanless architecture

The new MacBook is the first Mac notebook ever without a fan. Since the Intel Core M chip draws only 5 watts of power and therefore generates less heat, no fan or heat pipe is required. Instead, the logic board is seated on top of an anisotropic graphite sheet, which helps disperse any heat that is generated out to the sides, all while your Mac stays virtually silent. The new MacBook is made even more efficient by OS X features like Timer Coalescing, App Nap, and Safari Power Saver, which ensure that every task is performed using just the right amount of power. No more, no less.

Logic board

With the new MacBook, we were able to take what we learned from making thin yet powerful devices like iPhone and iPad and push that knowledge even further. We carefully arranged the processor, flash storage, and memory on the smallest and highest-density logic board ever in a Mac. In fact, it’s 67 percent smaller than the logic board in the 11-inch MacBook Air.

Storage and memory

Even with its miniaturized internal components, the new MacBook has an impressive capacity to store the files and run the applications you need every day. MacBook features 8GB of fast, power-efficient 1600MHz LPDDR3 onboard memory. Combine that with 256GB or 512GB of flash storage and you get an amazingly thin and light notebook with snappy performance.

Innovation on every level.

To achieve all-day battery life,1 we needed to use every millimeter of space inside the slim MacBook enclosure. Traditional rectangular batteries leave unused space when placed in a curved enclosure, so we created a new type of battery technology that allowed for an innovative terraced battery cell, custom shaped to fit the specific contours of the enclosure. The result is 35 percent more battery cell capacity than would have been possible before. So all the available space in the enclosure is used, and you have all the battery life you need to get you through the day.

The battery cells in the new MacBook are not only designed with enormous attention to detail, but are also assembled with extreme precision and care. High-speed cameras first take detailed photos of both the casing and the battery. We use those photos to account for microscopic variations in each enclosure, and carefully place the batteries so that not a single millimeter of space is wasted.

Incredibly portable.
With one amazing port.

To create a notebook as thin and light as the new MacBook, we had to strive for efficiency in every detail, right down to how it connects to peripherals and power. So we contributed to a new universal connectivity standard that combines the essential functions you need every day in one dynamic port. The amazing USB-C port offers charging, quick USB 3 data transfer for connecting to external devices and peripherals, and video output that supports HDMI, VGA, and DisplayPort connections. All in a small, reversible design that’s one-third the size of the current USB port.

The world’s most energy-efficient notebook.

Each aspect of the new MacBook — from the Retina display to the terraced battery to the advanced technologies of OS X — has been optimized to be as energy efficient as possible, with a typical energy consumption of 10.10 kWh per year. It also exceeds the low power requirements set by the EPA, giving it ENERGY STAR 6.1 qualification. And because the battery in the new MacBook requires less frequent charging, it leaves a smaller carbon footprint from day-to-day use.

Designed with the environment in mind.

We designed the new MacBook to be free of many harmful toxins, including beryllium, BFRs, and PVC. It’s also made from highly recyclable materials such as aluminum and glass. The new MacBook has earned the highest rating of Gold from EPEAT, which evaluates the environmental impact of a product based on how recyclable it is, how much energy it uses, and how it’s designed and manufactured.

Send and receive both iMessage and SMS text messages on your Mac. Start an email, document, or browsing session on one device and instantly pick it up on another. And turn on the Personal Hotspot on your iPhone right from your Mac so you can get online in an instant.

iCloud. Everything you love, everywhere you go.

With iCloud, your data is kept up to date on all your devices. So a contact or a calendar event you add on your iPhone also appears on your Mac. You can send driving directions from your Mac to your iPhone. Add a meeting to your calendar on your Mac and receive an alert on your iPad. Even start a Messages conversation on your iPhone and finish it on your Mac. If you’re an Apple Music member, your entire library lives in the cloud, so you can always access all your music without it taking up any space on your devices. And iCloud Drive lets you access all your documents on your Mac and iOS devices and even on a PC. So your files will go wherever you do.

Security was the first thought.

Not an afterthought.

OS X is engineered with advanced technologies that are constantly working together to keep your Mac and the information on it safe. Gatekeeper makes it safer to download and install apps from the web. FileVault safeguards data using powerful encryption. Sandboxing helps protect your system by isolating apps from each other, as well as from your system and your data. Customizable privacy settings keep your personal information under your control. Find My Mac helps you locate your Mac on a map, set a passcode remotely, and more.
The best way to keep your Mac secure is to keep your software up to date. The Mac App Store notifies you when an update is available. And because OS X El Capitan is a free upgrade, it’s easy to keep your Mac safe with the latest security features and enhancements.

Compatible with Windows.

The versatility and power of OS X help a Mac fit in just about anywhere — including Windows networks. Want to transfer your files, photos, and other data from a Windows PC? OS X lets you do that easily with Migration Assistant. If you want to run Windows on your Mac, you can do that with Boot Camp.5 OS X has built-in support for Microsoft Exchange, so you can use your Mac at home and at work and keep all your messages, meetings, and contacts in sync. And, of course, you can work with popular file types such as JPG, MP3, and PDF, as well as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents.

Accessibility built in.

OS X comes standard with a wide range of assistive technologies that help people with disabilities experience what the Mac has to offer, including many features you won’t find in other operating systems — at any price. For example, the built-in VoiceOver screen reader, available in over 30 languages, makes it possible for those who are blind or have low vision to control their computers using key commands or gestures on a Multi‑Touch trackpad. Switch Control makes it easier to navigate menus and operate basic controls such as volume, brightness, eject, and media playback. OS X also offers out-of-the-box support for more than 50 braille displays (including Bluetooth displays) and many other accessibility features, such as dynamic full-screen magnification, playback of closed captions, and a scalable screen.

Built-in Apps

One of the best things about a Mac is everything you can do with it.

Every Mac comes with a collection of great apps for things you do every day, like Safari for surfing the web, Photos for managing your photos and videos, Pages for creating documents, Numbers for making spreadsheets, and Keynote for preparing presentations. There are apps for sending email and text messages, taking notes, and staying up to date with your contacts and calendar. It even comes with the Mac App Store for finding new apps. Your Mac is more than fully featured, it’s fully loaded.

All your photos. Always with you and picture perfect.

The Photos app for Mac makes it simple to manage a lifetime’s worth of photos and videos. Powerful yet easy-to-use editing tools let you edit like a pro even if you’re a beginner. And you can add to your toolkit with editing extensions from your favorite developers and access them right in the Photos app. Photos has also been fine-tuned to make it even easier to manage your library. Now you can add a location to a single image or a group of photos, and you can batch change photo titles, descriptions, and keywords. Naming your favorite people in Faces is faster with a streamlined workflow. And you can sort your albums — and the contents inside them — by date, title, and more.

Featuring an easy-to-use and streamlined design, the all-new Photos has been engineered from the ground up to help you keep your growing library organized and accessible. Powerful and intuitive editing tools help you perfect your images as well as create beautiful gifts for sharing. And with iCloud Photo Library, a lifetime’s worth of photos and videos can be stored in the cloud — so you can access your entire collection from your Mac, iOS devices, and even your PC, anytime.

iCloud Photo Library. One convenient home for all your photos and videos.

iCloud Photo Library gives you access to your entire Mac photo and video library from all your devices. If you shoot a snapshot, slo-mo, or selfie on your iPhone, it’s automatically added to iCloud Photo Library as well — so it appears on your Mac, your iOS devices, on iCloud.com, and your PC. And since your collection is organized the same way across your Apple devices, navigating your library always feels familiar.

Make an edit here, see it there.

When you make changes on your Mac like editing a photo, marking a Favorite, or adding to an album, they’re kept up to date on your iPhone, your iPad, and iCloud.com. And vice versa — any changes made on your iOS devices are automatically reflected on your Mac.

Fill your library, not your device.

iCloud Photo Library can help you make the most of the space on your Mac. When you choose “Optimize Mac Storage,” all your full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud in their original formats, with storage-saving versions kept on your Mac as space is needed. You can also optimize storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, so you can access more photos and videos than ever before. You get 5GB of free storage in iCloud — and as your library grows, you have the option to choose a plan for up to 1TB.

The moment you’re looking for, always at hand.

The beautiful design of the Photos app uses Moments, Collections, and Years views to automatically organize your photos and videos by when and where they were taken. With dramatically more screen space devoted to your photos, you can easily scan your entire library at a glance and quickly find the content you’re looking for. A new, streamlined toolbar puts the right controls at your fingertips, giving you instant access to the photos you’ve shared, the albums you’ve made, and the projects you’ve created. And you can use gestures to browse your entire photo collection with just a touch.

Moments
The Moments view groups photos and videos taken around the same time and place, like an afternoon hike. You can also easily add or adjust a location in your photos. And Live Photos taken on an iPhone come to life when you hover over them with your cursor.

Collections
Collections are made up of distinct Moments that were taken at the same place, such as your four-day trip to the Southwest.

Years.
View your entire library in a beautiful mosaic of all the photos and videos you’ve taken each year. Click and hold any thumbnail to bring up a preview, and scrub over the collection to see previews of every image. Just release the click to open up the picture.

Shared.
With iCloud Photo Sharing, you can get an overview of the photos and videos you’ve shared with friends and family, and the ones they’ve shared with you. And it’s easier than ever to see Likes and Comments that have been posted.

Albums.
View the Albums and Smart Albums you’ve created, as well as preset Albums, which automatically group your photos into Favorites, Videos, Panoramas, and more. You can sort your albums — and the contents inside them — by date, title, and more. And you can name your favorite people in the Faces album faster than ever.

Projects.
View the books, cards, calendars, print orders, and slideshows you’ve created. You can keep working on existing projects or start new ones with ease.
