Features

Make the most of your day.

From startup to sundown.

Fifth-generation Intel Core processors in MacBook Air give you more time to do more things. Add that to an array of other smart and efficient features, and you have an incredible amount of power in your hands. While carrying next to nothing.

Up to 12 hours of battery life.

Power through your whole day.

Thanks to compact all-flash storage in MacBook Air, there’s plenty of room for a big battery. Working together with the power-efficient fifth-generation Intel Core architecture, this battery can post some impressive numbers. The 11-inch model gets up to 9 hours of battery life on a single charge and the 13-inch model gets up to 12 hours. That gives you all-day power for surfing the web or watching iTunes movies. Put MacBook Air to sleep for more than 3 hours, and it enters standby mode to conserve battery life for up to 30 days. And if you enable Power Nap, you’ll continue to receive new email and calendar invitations while your computer is asleep.

Fifth-generation Intel Core processons.

Performance meet endurance.

Whatever the task, new fifth-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors with Intel HD Graphics 6000 are up to it. From editing photos to browsing the web, everything happens ultrafast. And all that power is encased in an incredibly thin 0.68-inch unibody design that weighs only 2.38 pounds.

MacBook Air is powered by fifth-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors. This ultra-efficient architecture was designed to use less power and still deliver high performance. Which means not only can you do whatever you want — you can keep doing it for longer than before. In addition, the Intel HD Graphics 6000 processor offers advanced performance you’ll especially notice with games and other graphics-intensive tasks.

802.11ac Wi-Fi.

The definition of fast.

With the latest 802.11ac technology, MacBook Air takes Wi-Fi speeds over the top. Connect to an 802.11ac base station — including AirPort Extreme or AirPort Time Capsule — and experience wireless performance up to 3x faster than the previous Wi-Fi generation. 802.11ac also delivers expanded range, so you can work more freely than ever.
MacBook Air supports ultrafast 802.11ac Wi-Fi. When connected to an 802.11ac base station — including AirPort Extreme and AirPort Time Capsule — wireless performance is up to 3x faster than 802.11n Wi-Fi. And your Wi-Fi range improves as well. With Bluetooth technology, you can connect MacBook Air to Bluetooth-enabled devices like speakers and headphones. Even without all the wires, you’re totally connected.

Fast all-flash storage.

Ready. Set. Done.

Flash storage in MacBook Air is up to 17x faster than a 5400-rpm notebook hard drive. So everything you do is snappy and responsive. MacBook Air even wakes up fast, thanks to flash storage and fifth-generation Intel Core processors.
Part of what makes MacBook Air so responsive is that it’s designed entirely around flash storage. Not only does this make MacBook Air much lighter and more portable than traditional notebooks, it also provides faster access to data. Available in capacities up to 512GB, this PCIe-based flash storage is up to 17x faster than a traditional 5400-rpm notebook hard drive. So when you flip open MacBook Air, it’s ready to go right away. Even after a month in standby mode, the screen springs to life.

Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3.

Make some powerful connections.

With a Thunderbolt 2 port that’s twice as fast as the previous generation, you can connect your MacBook Air to the latest devices and displays, like the Apple Thunderbolt Display. But that’s not the whole story. MacBook Air also comes equipped with two USB 3 ports, so you can connect the latest USB 3 devices and all your USB 2 devices as well. With just a few connections, MacBook Air transforms from an ultraportable notebook to a complete workstation.

Display, camera, and mics.

Impressive. In every sense.

Make FaceTime calls from your MacBook Air to an iPhone 4 or later, iPad, iPod touch, or another Mac running FaceTime for Mac.

LED-backlit display. Millions of pixels.
Millimeters thin.

Corner to corner and pixel by pixel, the MacBook Air display is both an engineering feat and a design breakthrough. The display measures a mere 4.86 millimeters (0.19 inch) thin, yet its resolution makes you feel like you’re looking at a larger screen. The 11-inch MacBook Air features a resolution of 1366 by 768 pixels, while the 13-inch model wows with a resolution of 1440 by 900 pixels. And LED backlighting makes colors bright and vibrant from edge to edge. So whether you’re editing photos, perfecting a presentation, or watching a movie, you’re going to love what you see.

720p FaceTime HD camera.
Stay sharp.

Let your friends and family see more of you with the 720p FaceTime HD camera. Every smile looks bright, even halfway around the world. And the widescreen format means everyone can fit into the picture without having to crowd around the display.

Dual mics. They’ll hear you loud and clear.

The dual microphones in MacBook Air are great for when you want to be heard. If you’re making a FaceTime call, for example, the mics reduce background noise from behind the notebook. And when you use Dictation, they create an adaptive audio beam that intelligently adjusts to detect your voice — instead of the noise around you.

Multi-Touch trackpad.

It goes hand in hand with OS X.

The Multi-Touch gestures in OS X make everything you do on MacBook Air more intuitive, direct, and fun. And the spacious Multi-Touch trackpad is perfectly designed for them, whether it’s a three-finger swipe to activate Mission Control or a four-finger pinch to see all your apps in Launchpad. Gesture responses are smooth and realistic. So when you’re scrolling up and down a web page or swiping from one full-screen app to another, it’s almost like you’re touching what you’re seeing.

Swipe up on the trackpad to get a bird’s-eye view of everything running on your Mac.

Backlit keyboard.

What you see is what you type.

As incredibly compact as MacBook Air is, it still manages to fit a full‑size keyboard that makes typing as natural as it is comfortable. And the keyboard is backlit, so you can type with ease in even the dimmest light. A built-in ambient light sensor detects changes in lighting conditions and adjusts the display and keyboard brightness automatically. From a seat in a sunny café to a seat on a cross‑country red‑eye, you’ll always have the perfect lighting for any environment.

A pair of stereo speakers is hidden within the unibody enclosure.

iCloud.

Your content. On all your devices.

iCloud stores your content and lets you access your music, photos, calendars, contacts, documents, and more from whatever device you’re on. So if you take a picture with your iPhone or make changes to your meeting schedule on your iPad, iCloud makes sure everything appears on your Mac, too. And it works both ways — create a to-do list on your Mac and you can make edits to it on your iPhone.
iCloud connects you and your Apple devices in amazing ways. iCloud Photo Library and iCloud Drive keep all your photos, videos, and documents stored securely and updated everywhere. Family Sharing lets you easily share music, movies, photos, and more with everyone in your family. Find My iPhone even helps you find your device if you lose it. With iCloud, you always have what’s most important to you on whatever device you have in hand. And it’s all done automatically. Just like that.

iCloud Photo Library

iCloud Photo Library stores every photo and video you take, making them accessible from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC and on iCloud.com. iCloud Photo Sharing makes it easy to show off just the photos and videos you want to just the people you want to see them. Invite your friends and family, and they can add their own photos, videos, and comments as well.

iCloud Photo Library stores every photo and video you take, and keeps them up to date on all your devices. Any edits you make are automatically updated everywhere. iCloud Photo Sharing makes it easy to share photos and videos with exactly the people you want to see them. Create a shared album and invite friends and family to add their photos and video clips as often as they want.

You’re never without your camera.
Now you’ll never be without your photos.

Every photo and video you take lives in iCloud — giving you the freedom to access your library from any device, anytime you want. So you can view a photo from last week or last year no matter where you are.

Access all your photos from anywhere.

iCloud Photo Library automatically keeps all your photos in the cloud, so you can access them on your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, on iCloud.com, or download them to your PC. And when you edit a picture using Photos, your changes are uploaded to iCloud and visible everywhere. Just go to iCloud settings, tap Photos, and enable iCloud Photo Library.

Organized here, there, and everywhere.

iCloud Photo Library keeps your photos and videos organized into Moments, Collections, and Years across all your devices — and even on the web. You can mark favorites, create albums, or drag photos into a custom order.

Fill your library, not your device.

Now you can spend more time shooting pictures and less time managing them. iCloud Photo Library helps you make the most of the space available on your Apple devices by automatically storing the original high-resolution photos and videos in iCloud and leaving behind the lightweight versions that are perfectly sized for each device — taking up only as much space as needed.

Always original. Down to every last pixel.

When you save photos and videos to iCloud Photo Library, your memories are always kept exactly as you took them. All your images are held in their original formats at full resolution — JPEG, RAW, PNG, GIF, TIFF, and MP4, as well as special formats you capture with your iPhone, like slo-mo, time-lapse, 4K videos, and Live Photos. And any edits you make are reversible, so you can always go back to your original shot in iCloud.

To get started, all it takes is a snapshot and some friends.

With iCloud Photo Sharing, you can create a shared album to control who sees what — because sometimes you only want to share your photos with the people who truly appreciate them. Simply choose a photo (or photos) to start with and invite a few friends to join in, make comments, and even add their own shots.

Create a shared album.

Start a shared album for an event or period of time, like a dinner party or an entire soccer season.

Invite who you want.

Invite up to 100 of your favorite people. Adding friends is as easy as clicking a contact.

Add photos with ease.

To post photos and videos, just tap iCloud Photo Sharing in your share sheet.

All the updates to your shared photos. All in one place.

With the Activity View in Photos, you can see all the updates to your shared albums at a glance, no matter which device you’re on. Quickly swipe through to browse the latest photos, videos, and comments. You can even make a few comments of your own.

People View
Easily manage subscribers, contributors, notification settings, invitations, and more.
Activity View
See the latest updates to all your photo streams at a glance. Add new photos or comments.
Real-time notifications
When someone joins your album, posts a photo, or makes a comment, you’ll be the first to know.

See your shared albums on the big screen.

With iCloud Photo Sharing and Apple TV, you can view your group’s latest photos and videos on your HDTV for some truly entertaining reality television. So you can, say, check out the photos and videos of your Argentine vacation — from everyone who went on the trip. All gathered around your widescreen TV.

iCloud Drive

With iCloud Drive, you can safely store all your documents in iCloud and access them from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or even PC. And on your iOS device, those documents are easier than ever to find — thanks to the new iCloud Drive app built into iOS 9, which lets you access all the files you store in iCloud from one convenient place.

Any kind of file. On all your devices.

With iCloud Drive, you can safely store all your presentations, spreadsheets, PDFs, images, and any other kind of document in iCloud — and access them from your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, Mac, or PC. And the new iCloud Drive app built into iOS 9 makes it even easier to bring up documents on your iOS device. Because you can access anything you save to iCloud right from one place on your Home screen.

Keeping your files in iCloud is simple. Just as it should be.

With the iCloud Drive app built into iOS 9, all your files are easy to find, organize, and share — all from one place. To add new files, just start a new document using an iCloud-enabled app on your iOS device. And on your Mac running OS X Yosemite or later, or your PC running Windows 7 or later, you can just drag files into the iCloud Drive folder. Everything stays up to date automatically — across all your devices.

Edits you make on one device
appear on all of them.

Using iCloud Drive means you’ll always have access to the latest version of all your documents from any device. For example, you can start creating a presentation on your Mac at home, then make final edits and present it in class using your iPad. All the changes you make along the way appear automatically on all your devices.

Start your work in one app.
Add the finishing touches in another.

Your apps can now share files, which means you can access and work on the same file across multiple apps. Easily search for a file or browse in the new iCloud Drive app built into iOS 9 by date, name, or tags you added on your Mac. When you’ve found the file you need, simply open it in any compatible app to edit it. For example, you can create a drawing in a sketching app, then open it in a painting app to color it in. Or create a chart in one app and place it in a slideshow using a presentation app. No more making copies or importing documents from one app to another. It’s a whole new level of collaboration between apps.

Family Sharing

Now up to six members of your family can share iTunes, iBooks, and App Store purchases, along with family photos, calendars, locations, and more. And with an Apple Music family membership, everyone gets full access to Apple Music, too. It’s the easy way to bring harmony to your family’s digital life.

Bring harmony to your family’s digital life.

Family Sharing makes it easy for up to six people in your family to share each other’s iTunes, iBooks, and App Store purchases without sharing accounts. Pay for family purchases with the same credit card and approve kids’ spending right from a parent’s device. Share photos, a family calendar, and more to help keep everyone connected. And with an Apple Music family membership, up to six people can get full access to Apple Music, too.

Getting set up is simple.

Create your Family Sharing group, invite members to join, and enjoy each other’s digital company. Go to iCloud settings on your iOS device or Mac and tap Set Up Family Sharing to get started.

Get organized.

To get started, one adult in your household — the organizer — invites up to five additional family members and agrees to pay for any iTunes, iBooks, and App Store purchases they initiate while part of the family group. Once family members join, the features of Family Sharing are set up on everyone’s devices automatically.

All your family’s purchases
on all your family’s devices.

Everything’s better when shared, and sharing has never been easier. Once you’ve set up Family Sharing, all the songs, albums, movies, TV shows, books, and apps ever purchased by family members are immediately available to everyone else in the group. And, of course, so are new purchases. The content appears automatically in the Purchased tab in iTunes, iBooks, or the App Store for each family member. Just select the family member whose collection you’d like to browse, then download or play the content you choose. Other family members can access your collection in the same way. If you want to keep some purchases private, you can choose to hide individual items.

An Apple Music membership for everyone in your family.

With an Apple Music family membership, up to six people in your family can enjoy unlimited access to Apple Music on their devices. Everyone gets full, individual access to the Apple Music library, expert recommendations, 24/7 worldwide radio with Beats 1, and on-demand radio stations. It’s the whole world of music for the whole family.

Making purchases is easy.
So is setting limits.

All new iTunes, iBooks, and App Store purchases initiated by family members will be billed to the organizer’s account. But the organizer can still call the shots. Just turn on Ask to Buy for children in the family. When a child initiates a purchase, an alert is sent to the organizer, who can review the download and approve or decline it right from the organizer’s device. This applies to both purchases and free downloads.

They ask to buy.

Before your children can make a purchase, they must ask your permission.

You reply from anywhere.

A notification appears on your device. You can review the request, then approve or decline it.

The whole family can contribute to
the family photo album.

Now collecting and sharing family memories is easier and more fun. When Family Sharing is turned on, a shared album is set up automatically in the Photos app on all family members’ devices. Then everyone can add photos, videos, and comments to the album and be notified when something new is added.

Now it’s easy to be one of those
organized families.

Family Sharing creates a family calendar where everyone can view, add, or change events and appointments, and they can also get an alert when something changes. And anyone can use the Reminders app to send time or location reminders to the family. So when it’s picture day, pizza night, or just a trip to the beach, everyone’s in the know.

Keep track of where everybody is.

When you join a Family Sharing group, you can start sharing your location with the rest of the family automatically. If you’re running late to a restaurant or need to know if your kid made it to band practice, just use Find My Friends or the Messages app to keep tabs on each other. If you need privacy, you can temporarily stop sharing your location by turning off Share My Location in iCloud settings.

Find everybody’s devices.

Finding your family’s lost devices is easier when everyone can help. With Family Sharing and Find My iPhone, any family member can help locate another member’s missing device. Their devices appear in a single list in the Find My iPhone app. So it’s easier than ever to track down a misplaced or stolen iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Notes.

Now you can do so much more with Notes — like adding photos, maps, and web links, or even drawing a sketch with your finger. And Notes works with iCloud so you can access any of your notes on any of your devices. Use Notes to create a wish list or add images to a note while browsing on your Mac, then pull it up on your iPhone when you’re out and about. All your content is updated in real time, so you’ll always have your latest notes at hand.

All your music, everywhere.

If you’re an Apple Music member, your entire library lives in iCloud, so not only will you always be able to access all your music, but it won’t take up any space on your devices. And iCloud Music Library makes whatever you buy in iTunes and the App Store immediately available on all your devices, too. iTunes Match also lets you store your other music in iCloud, like songs you’ve imported from CDs or purchased somewhere other than iTunes — so all your music is always everywhere you want it.

Mail, Calendar, Contacts, and Reminders.

With iCloud, you have your inbox, calendar, contacts, and other important information in your pocket and on your desktop. When you delete an email, add a calendar event, update a contact, or check off a to-do item, iCloud makes the changes everywhere.

Find My iPhone, iPad, or Mac.

Lost your iPhone? Can’t find your iPad? Misplaced your MacBook Air? iCloud can help you try to get them back. If it looks like you won't be able to, Activation Lock makes it hard for anyone who’s not you to use or sell your device.

Safari and iCloud Keychain.

Start surfing on your iPhone and pick up where you left off on your Mac or iPad — or vice versa. And don’t worry about remembering all those passwords for websites or apps. iCloud Keychain keeps track of your account names, passwords, and credit card numbers.

Backup.

You have all sorts of important stuff on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, like your photos and videos. iCloud automatically backs it up daily anytime your device is plugged in and connected to Wi-Fi. You don’t have to do a thing. And you can use your backup to restore your device or set up a new one.

Privacy and Security.

Apple takes data security and the privacy of your personal information very seriously, and iCloud features are designed with your privacy in mind. All your iCloud content — like photos, documents, and contacts — is encrypted when sent over the Internet and, in most cases, when stored on our servers. If we use third-party vendors to store your information, we encrypt it and never give them the keys. And security enhancements like two‑factor authentication helps to ensure the important information in your account can only be accessed by you, and only with your devices.

iCloud.com.

iCloud.com is a great way to access your information when you’re away from your iOS devices. You can sign in to iCloud.com from any Mac or PC to view all your photos and videos in iCloud Photo Library. You can also use iCloud.com to view documents you saved in iCloud Drive and to access features like Find My iPhone, Notes, Mail, Calendar, Contacts, iWork for iCloud, and more.

Powerful apps included.

Get right to work. And play.

Every new Mac comes with Photos, iMovie, GarageBand, Pages, Numbers, and Keynote. So you can be creative and productive right from the start. You also get great apps for email, surfing the web, sending texts, and making FaceTime calls — there’s even an app for finding new apps.

OS X El Capitan.

There’s more to love with every click.

OS X is the operating system that powers everything you do on a Mac. With OS X El Capitan, it’s simple to do amazing things and delightful to do all the everyday things. And it works seamlessly with your apps and iOS devices.

Design

The deeper you look, the more beautiful it becomes.

Sure, MacBook Air is unbelievably thin and light. But we also designed it to be powerful, capable, durable, and enjoyable to use. With enough battery life to get you through the day. That’s the difference between a notebook that’s simply thin and light and one that’s so much more.

Thin, light, durable.
Thank you, flash storage.

Flash storage helps make MacBook Air incredibly thin and light — under an inch and as little as 2.38 pounds. Flash is also solid state, meaning there are no moving parts. Which makes it reliable, durable, and quiet. And it takes up much less space than a traditional hard drive — about 90 percent less, in fact. That creates room for other important things, like a bigger battery. So you have a notebook that weighs almost nothing and runs all day long. Now that’s mobility mastered.

See your QWERTY in lights.

Anyone can try to make a notebook that’s thin and light. Success comes in doing it without cutting corners. That’s why MacBook Air features a full-size keyboard that’s just as comfortable to type on as a desktop keyboard. And the keyboard is backlit, so you can type in low-light conditions with ease. A built‑in sensor detects changes in the ambient lighting and adjusts the keyboard and display brightness automatically, giving you the perfect illumination in any environment.

Multi-Touch. Precise control at your fingertips.

Multi-Touch is part of practically every Apple product. It’s the best and most personal way to interact with your devices. The optimal way to experience Multi-Touch on a notebook is through a trackpad. That’s precisely the case with MacBook Air. The trackpad’s spacious, all-glass surface doesn’t have a button because the whole thing is the button. And with Multi-Touch gestures in OS X, you can interact with MacBook Air in ways that feel completely intuitive and realistic.

A battery that can get you through the day.
And the month.

If you looked inside MacBook Air, you’d see something remarkable: how much space we devoted to the battery. That’s thanks to smaller components such as flash storage. And when the goal is to design the perfect notebook for everyday use, giving priority to the battery just makes sense. With the 11-inch MacBook Air, you’ll get up to 9 hours of battery life while surfing the web or up to 10 hours while watching iTunes movies. And the 13-inch model lasts up to a staggering 12 hours. Put MacBook Air to sleep for more than 3 hours, and it enters standby mode. That means you can come back to MacBook Air up to an entire month later and it wakes in an instant. Time is on your side, courtesy of MacBook Air.

A thing of beauty.
And durability.

MacBook Air features a unibody design for both the main enclosure and the display. Unibody construction means a higher-precision, less complex design with fewer parts. That translates to a notebook that’s exceptionally thin and light, yet durable enough to handle the rigors of everyday use. In addition, MacBook Air offers innovations you won’t find anywhere else — like the MagSafe 2 power connector, which breaks cleanly away from the notebook if you accidentally trip over the power cord.

The magnetic power cord attaches
securely and detaches cleanly.

Performance

Power to go. And keep going.

Underneath the sleek exterior, MacBook Air is packed with powerful components that give you smoother graphics, faster storage, and all-around serious performance. Not to mention enough battery life to get you through the day. The result? A computer that’s as capable as it is portable.

New fifth-generation Intel Core processors with fast graphics.

Fifth-generation Intel Core i5 and i7 processors — based on the groundbreaking Broadwell ULT architecture — give MacBook Air the power you need to finish the task at hand. Whatever the task may be. The dual-core Intel Core i5 with Turbo Boost speeds up to 2.7GHz comes standard. Or you can choose the optional dual-core Intel Core i7 processor for 2.2GHz of processing power and Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.2GHz. In addition, these processors are much more power efficient, which means you’re able to do all the things you love to do on a computer for longer than ever — up to 9 hours between battery charges on the 11-inch MacBook Air and up to 12 hours on the 13-inch model.1 And with the Intel HD Graphics 6000 processor, you get fast graphics performance. So when you’re trying to level up in your favorite game — or taking on other graphics-intensive tasks — things move more smoothly and with greater detail.

 Fast memory.

MacBook Air features up to 8GB of superfast, power-efficient 1600MHz LPDDR3 memory. Combine that with powerful processors and fast flash storage and you get a notebook that can run more memory-intensive applications at the same time — without compromising performance.

Fast flash storage. Up to 512 GB.

From the moment you start up MacBook Air, you realize this is exactly how a notebook should perform. Much of that power is thanks to flash storage, which is up to 17x faster than a traditional 5400-rpm notebook hard drive. Apps launch quickly. Files and documents open faster. Even after a month in standby mode, MacBook Air springs to life.

Thunderbolt 2 and USB 3.

A high-speed Thunderbolt 2 port and two USB 3 ports allow MacBook Air to transfer data at lightning-fast speeds and connect to displays like the Apple Thunderbolt Display. So with a few connections, you can turn a highly portable notebook into a highly versatile workstation.

OS X

OS X.
It’s what makes a Mac a Mac.
OS X is the operating system that powers every Mac. Built on a rock-solid UNIX foundation, it’s engineered to take full advantage of what the hardware is capable of. It’s designed to be as easy to use as it is beautiful to look at. It comes with an amazing collection of apps you’ll use — and love — every day. And it enables your Mac and iOS devices to work wonderfully together.

Easy to learn. Easy to use.

On a Mac, it’s easy to find, share, and do just about everything. You can control your Mac with simple, intuitive gestures. The Dock lets you launch your favorite apps with a click. Launchpad gives you quick access to your full library of apps. The Finder lets you browse and organize your files on your Mac and in iCloud with ease. Spotlight search makes locating documents, launching apps, and looking up information effortless. You can even have your apps and the operating system software update automatically. In fact, a Mac does so many things automatically, sometimes you don’t have to do anything at all.

Finder

The Finder is a simple way to access practically everything on your Mac and in iCloud.

Launchpad

With Launchpad, you can see, organize, and open all your apps in one place.

Spotlight

Spotlight lets you quickly find information on your Mac and from Wikipedia, news, iTunes, Maps, and more.

Every detail considered. And reconsidered.

Over the years, OS X has changed in many ways. But the principles that define it haven’t: power, simplicity, beauty. Across-the-board refinements have made OS X El Capitan even more powerful and easier to use, while maintaining the elements essential to Mac. As with every Apple product, each detail is obsessed over: from the distinctive icons in the Dock to the streamlined toolbars to the fluidity of navigating everything from photos to web pages. Because when it comes to a great experience, the difference is in the details.

Clean controls

The Mac experience feels clean and refined thanks to crisp buttons, checkboxes, and controls.

New system font

OS X El Capitan introduces San Francisco — a new system font designed for optimal readability on a Mac and especially on a Retina display.

Translucent

Translucent toolbars let you know there’s more to see than what’s visible in the window as you scroll. And a translucent sidebar gives you a glimpse of what’s behind the active window.

Streamlined toolbars

We’ve put more features into less space so some of your favorite apps, like Safari, Maps, and Photos, let you see more of your web pages, maps, and images.

Control your Mac with a click, swipe, or press.

The Multi-Touch trackpad unique to the Mac makes gestures easy and smooth — so using your fingers to tap, scroll, pinch, and swipe feels perfectly natural. These Multi-Touch gestures are a fundamental part of your experience, which makes everything you do on your Mac simple, intuitive, and fun. And with the Force Touch trackpad on the new MacBook and MacBook Pro with Retina display, you can now unlock even more ways to interact with your Mac — right from your fingertips.

Two-finger swipe to navigate
Using two fingers, brush left and right along the trackpad to navigate forward and back in Safari.

Pinch to zoom
Zoom in and out of photos and web pages by moving your thumb and finger in a pinch gesture.

Three-finger swipe
Swipe three fingers to move between desktops and full-screen apps.

Three-finger swipe up for Mission Control
Swipe three fingers up on the trackpad to get a bird’s-eye view of everything running on your Mac.

Force click
Adding a little more pressure to a click enables new capabilities — Force click a word to learn the definition, an address to reveal a map, a link to preview a web page, and more.

Software and hardware
made for each other.

OS X is built to bring out the best in your Mac, so you get a fully integrated system in which everything works together seamlessly. It works with the processor and graphics controller in your Mac to deliver the best possible performance. It works with the super-responsive trackpad in Mac notebooks so Multi-Touch gestures feel natural to use. OS X even keeps your Mac up to date while it sleeps. Advanced power-saving technologies help extend battery life. And in OS X El Capitan, new system fonts are designed to look crisp and vivid on high-resolution Retina displays.

Amazing apps for everyday things.

With every new Mac, you get a collection of powerful productivity and creativity apps: Pages, Keynote, Numbers, Photos, iMovie, and GarageBand. And you get more great apps for the things you do every day: surf the web, make video calls, send messages, get driving directions, manage your contacts, access your email, and more. If you already use an iPhone or iPad, they’ll feel instantly familiar. Because they’re native apps — not web apps in a browser — they also take full advantage of the power of your Mac to deliver the fastest possible performance. And with the Mac App Store built in, it’s easy to find even more great apps.

Built for power. From the ground up.

Making powerful things simple requires some seriously advanced technologies. OS X is loaded with them. It’s built on a rock-solid, time-tested UNIX foundation that provides unparalleled stability and industry-leading support for Internet standards. OS X takes full advantage of the multicore Intel processors and fast flash storage in your Mac to make quick work of any task. And the incredible graphics capabilities in OS X supply applications like Final Cut Pro with impressive power.

If you use an iPhone, you’ll love what you can do with a Mac.

A Mac will work with your iPhone in ways no other computer can. You can make and receive iPhone calls on your Mac, even if your iPhone is in another room. Send and receive both iMessage and SMS text messages on your Mac. Start an email, document, or browsing session on one device and instantly pick it up on another. And turn on the Personal Hotspot on your iPhone right from your Mac so you can get online in an instant.

iCloud. Everything you love, everywhere you go.

With iCloud, your data is kept up to date on all your devices. So a contact or a calendar event you add on your iPhone also appears on your Mac. You can send driving directions from your Mac to your iPhone. Add a meeting to your calendar on your Mac and receive an alert on your iPad. Even start a Messages conversation on your iPhone and finish it on your Mac. If you’re an Apple Music member, your entire library lives in the cloud, so you can always access all your music without it taking up any space on your devices. And iCloud Drive lets you access all your documents on your Mac and iOS devices and even on a PC. So your files will go wherever you do.

Security was the first thought.

Not an afterthought.

OS X is engineered with advanced technologies that are constantly working together to keep your Mac and the information on it safe. Gatekeeper makes it safer to download and install apps from the web. FileVault safeguards data using powerful encryption. Sandboxing helps protect your system by isolating apps from each other, as well as from your system and your data. Customizable privacy settings keep your personal information under your control. Find My Mac helps you locate your Mac on a map, set a passcode remotely, and more.
The best way to keep your Mac secure is to keep your software up to date. The Mac App Store notifies you when an update is available. And because OS X El Capitan is a free upgrade, it’s easy to keep your Mac safe with the latest security features and enhancements.

Compatible with Windows.

The versatility and power of OS X help a Mac fit in just about anywhere — including Windows networks. Want to transfer your files, photos, and other data from a Windows PC? OS X lets you do that easily with Migration Assistant. If you want to run Windows on your Mac, you can do that with Boot Camp.5 OS X has built-in support for Microsoft Exchange, so you can use your Mac at home and at work and keep all your messages, meetings, and contacts in sync. And, of course, you can work with popular file types such as JPG, MP3, and PDF, as well as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint documents.

Accessibility built in.

OS X comes standard with a wide range of assistive technologies that help people with disabilities experience what the Mac has to offer, including many features you won’t find in other operating systems — at any price. For example, the built-in VoiceOver screen reader, available in over 30 languages, makes it possible for those who are blind or have low vision to control their computers using key commands or gestures on a Multi‑Touch trackpad. Switch Control makes it easier to navigate menus and operate basic controls such as volume, brightness, eject, and media playback. OS X also offers out-of-the-box support for more than 50 braille displays (including Bluetooth displays) and many other accessibility features, such as dynamic full-screen magnification, playback of closed captions, and a scalable screen.

Built-in Apps

One of the best things about a Mac is everything you can do with it.

Every Mac comes with a collection of great apps for things you do every day, like Safari for surfing the web, Photos for managing your photos and videos, Pages for creating documents, Numbers for making spreadsheets, and Keynote for preparing presentations. There are apps for sending email and text messages, taking notes, and staying up to date with your contacts and calendar. It even comes with the Mac App Store for finding new apps. Your Mac is more than fully featured, it’s fully loaded.

Photos

All your photos. Always with you and picture perfect.

The Photos app for Mac makes it simple to manage a lifetime’s worth of photos and videos. Powerful yet easy-to-use editing tools let you edit like a pro even if you’re a beginner. And you can add to your toolkit with editing extensions from your favorite developers and access them right in the Photos app. Photos has also been fine-tuned to make it even easier to manage your library. Now you can add a location to a single image or a group of photos, and you can batch change photo titles, descriptions, and keywords. Naming your favorite people in Faces is faster with a streamlined workflow. And you can sort your albums — and the contents inside them — by date, title, and more.
Featuring an easy-to-use and streamlined design, the all-new Photos has been engineered from the ground up to help you keep your growing library organized and accessible. Powerful and intuitive editing tools help you perfect your images as well as create beautiful gifts for sharing. And with iCloud Photo Library, a lifetime’s worth of photos and videos can be stored in the cloud — so you can access your entire collection from your Mac, iOS devices, and even your PC, anytime.

iCloud Photo Library. One convenient home for all your photos and videos.

iCloud Photo Library gives you access to your entire Mac photo and video library from all your devices. If you shoot a snapshot, slo-mo, or selfie on your iPhone, it’s automatically added to iCloud Photo Library as well — so it appears on your Mac, your iOS devices, on iCloud.com, and your PC. And since your collection is organized the same way across your Apple devices, navigating your library always feels familiar.

Make an edit here, see it there.

When you make changes on your Mac like editing a photo, marking a Favorite, or adding to an album, they’re kept up to date on your iPhone, your iPad, and iCloud.com. And vice versa — any changes made on your iOS devices are automatically reflected on your Mac.

Fill your library, not your device.

iCloud Photo Library can help you make the most of the space on your Mac. When you choose “Optimize Mac Storage,” all your full-resolution photos and videos are stored in iCloud in their original formats, with storage-saving versions kept on your Mac as space is needed. You can also optimize storage on your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, so you can access more photos and videos than ever before. You get 5GB of free storage in iCloud — and as your library grows, you have the option to choose a plan for up to 1TB.

The moment you’re looking for, always at hand.

The beautiful design of the Photos app uses Moments, Collections, and Years views to automatically organize your photos and videos by when and where they were taken. With dramatically more screen space devoted to your photos, you can easily scan your entire library at a glance and quickly find the content you’re looking for. A new, streamlined toolbar puts the right controls at your fingertips, giving you instant access to the photos you’ve shared, the albums you’ve made, and the projects you’ve created. And you can use gestures to browse your entire photo collection with just a touch.

Moments
The Moments view groups photos and videos taken around the same time and place, like an afternoon hike. You can also easily add or adjust a location in your photos. And Live Photos taken on an iPhone come to life when you hover over them with your cursor.

Pages for Mac is a powerful word processor that gives you everything you need to create documents that look beautiful. And read beautifully. Redesigned for OS X El Capitan, it lets you work seamlessly between Mac and iOS devices. And even work effortlessly with people who use Microsoft Word.

Powerful creative tools

Creative writing. No matter what your subject.

Express yourself both verbally and visually. But always artistically. Choose fonts, styles, and character and line spacing. Drop in a photo. Then resize it, rotate it, and remove the background. Maybe even add an interactive chart. And use the new Split View feature in OS X El Capitan to quickly drag in a logo from your graphic design app. Pages is a full‑featured word processor that helps you turn every document into a must‑read.

Say a lot. Before you write a word.
Apple‑designed templates help make your documents look professional from the start. There are 60 beautiful designs for all kinds of uses. It’s like having a graphic designer built in.

Communicate by design.
You can easily add photos, interactive charts, shapes, or tables. And everything snaps into perfect alignment thanks to the pixel‑accurate rulers and alignment guides. So your page looks just the way you pictured it.

Change your writing style instantly.
Preset styling options let you instantly customize text, images, shapes, cells, tables, and charts right when you create them. So each document has its own signature.

Intelligent word wrap. Words and pictures come together perfectly.
Your text automatically wraps around your image. And automatically wraps again if you drag it somewhere else. Now everything just looks smarter.

Split and conquer.

The new Split View feature in OS X El Capitan makes quick work of multitasking. Now you can update a document while checking facts online. Or edit a draft while you review comments in an email.

Designed for simplicity

Love at first draft.

From the word go, Pages places you in the perfect writing environment. It puts all the right tools in all the right places. Which makes it second nature to choose a look and customize the fonts, styles, and graphics. Since Pages is engineered for the 64‑bit power of OS X El Capitan, everything happens at the speed of thought, too.

The right tools, right at hand.
The format panel automatically displays relevant controls based on what you’ve selected. So you have the controls you want, just when you want them. And a simplified toolbar makes quick work of finding the tool you’re looking for.

More tools to design your page.

A sidebar that’s not just an aside.
The new sidebar helps you keep track of comments and changes even more easily. Hover over comments to see which text they refer to. Sort feedback by page and date, and filter it by author. So you can stay on top of things no matter how much editing you need to do.
The perfect list of tools. Including a tool to make lists.
Automatically format your lists. Check your spelling, grammar, and word count. Pages checks off all the things you’d want in a word processor. And more.

Pages everywhere

Put all your devices to work. Together.

You don’t work in just one place on just one device. The same goes for Pages. Documents created on your Mac look exactly the same on your iPhone or iPad and vice versa. And it’s effortless to move your work from one device to another. You can even access your documents from the web, share them, and collaborate with others in real time.

Always at hand.
Now with iCloud Drive, you have a place in the cloud where you can store all kinds of files, organize them however you want, and access them from any of your devices. Put a document in an iCloud Drive folder on one device and you’ll find it in the same folder on your other devices with your latest edits — so you never have to wonder what’s where or which is the latest version.

See it here. See it there.
With Handoff, you can seamlessly switch from Pages on your iOS device to Pages on your Mac and vice versa. Whatever document you were last working on will be there waiting for you with all your latest edits. Thanks to a single file format shared by Pages for Mac and Pages for iOS, your document will look the same no matter the device.
Welcome to the world wide workplace.
With iWork for iCloud, you can access all your documents from iCloud.com in any Mac or PC web browser. You can also share a document with others and edit it together in real time — whether they’re in the next room or on the other side of the world. It’s amazing. And amazingly productive.

You can even work on files that are stored with third-party storage providers. And documents can be sent via services such as Gmail or Dropbox. That means your coworkers aren’t working on lots of constantly changing versions and won’t have to worry about files they can’t open. Finally, everyone really is on the same page.

Share and share and share and share alike.
Quickly and easily share a link to your work via Mail, Messages, Twitter, or Facebook. So colleagues can conveniently view the shared document in any browser — even on iOS or Android. There have never been so many ways to increase your readership.

Translate your work. Into many formats.
Export your Pages document in Microsoft Word, PDF, plain text, or Pages ’09 formats. Or export in ePub format to make a gorgeous ebook.

And work effortlessly with people who use Microsoft Excel. Updated for OS X El Capitan, Numbers is now more powerful than ever.

Powerful creative tools

See the beauty in numbers.

A spreadsheet doesn’t have to look like a ledger. That’s why Numbers starts you off with a blank canvas instead of an endless grid. You can choose fonts and style cell borders. Add, resize, and apply styles to tables. Move everything around your canvas at will. And use the new Split View feature in OS X El Capitan to match your charts to the corporate style guide PDF. Next thing you know, you’ve turned budgeting into an art form.

Over 30 templates to start with. Just add your numbers.
Drop your data into one of the gorgeous, Apple‑designed templates. Suddenly, the numbers look better than they ever have.

Spreadsheets. Outside the lines.
A Numbers sheet is a blank canvas, so you can place multiple tables, images, and shapes anywhere you want. Pixel‑accurate rulers and alignment guides make it easy to do precisely that.
Design your data.
Preset styling options let you choose table designs right when you create them. And you can quickly customize the look of your tables with easy-to-use cell border styling controls.

Designed for simplicity

You’re a natural at math.

Starting with Numbers is as easy as 1, 2, 3. There are prebuilt templates for all your most common tasks. Coaching tips that pop up right when you need them. And an intuitive interface that simplifies the equation of finding the tools you want. Underneath it all, there’s an advanced calculation engine that makes full use of the 64-bit power of OS X El Capitan. So nothing will slow you down once you get going.

The right tools, right at hand.
The format panel automatically displays relevant controls based on what you’ve selected. So you have the controls you want, just when you want them. And a simplified toolbar makes quick work of finding the tool you’re looking for.

A better handle on tables and cells.
Selecting and editing tables, columns, rows, and cells is second nature in Numbers. Which makes working with your data just as intuitive. And with the new Transpose feature, you can instantly switch columns and rows with a quick click.

Math tutor included.
Turn on coaching tips, and help will pop up just when you need it. There’s no better way to figure out how to work with Numbers.

Advanced tools

Become a mathemagician.

Numbers supports over 250 functions. And it’s built with sophisticated tools that make using them way simpler than you’d think. With a few clicks, you can perform complex calculations, filter the data, and sum up what it all means. Running the numbers is now a simple operation.

Formulas, solved.
The functions browser lets you search over 250 functions, see example formulas, and get help. It’s really more like a formula genius.

Numbers knows what function you want before you do.
Function auto-complete suggests formulas as you begin to type them. It’s the fastest way to find the right function for whatever you need to do.

The quickest way to find the answer.
Quick calculations appear along the bottom when you select a range of cells. Just drag and drop the one you want. You can even customize calculations so your favorites are always close by.

Cells that almost think for themselves.
Just select a cell to see live formula results, error checking, exact values, and cell format in one place. See, you know a lot more already.

Data, visualized

Smarter ways to look at the numbers.

Numbers gives you dynamic methods to visualize your data. So you can spot patterns, recognize trends, and notice relationships. When you use the impressive charts, graphs, and tools, seeing becomes understanding.

Interactive charts and graphs. With a flat learning curve.
Make your data tell a story with animated charts that you control. Just drag the slider to spotlight important changes in the numbers. It’s remarkably revealing. And strikingly simple.

Highlight important data automatically.
Conditional highlighting automatically formats cells when they meet certain numerical, text, date, and duration criteria. Now critical information calls attention to itself.

Slice and dice the data. By filtering it.
Just right-click any column or open the filter panel. Numbers shows you ways to filter the data. There’s no quicker way to sort out what the numbers are saying.

Quickly focus your attention.
Press the Option key as you hover over tables to highlight just the cell you’re looking for and easily scan the related data in the same row and column.

Safari

The best way to see the sites.

The best browser for your Mac is the one that comes with your Mac. Safari is faster and more energy efficient than other browsers, so sites are more responsive and your notebook battery lasts longer between charges. Built-in privacy features help keep your browsing your business. Handy tools help you save, find, and share your favorites. And Safari works with iCloud to let you browse seamlessly across all your devices.

Longer battery life and faster performance.

With a blazing-fast JavaScript engine and energy-saving technologies, Safari is a faster, more enjoyable way to explore the web.

Browse longer. Watch more.

Safari is engineered specifically for Mac, so it takes advantage of the powerful technologies built into every one. And Safari now offers native support for Netflix. So compared with Chrome and Firefox, you can browse for up to two hours longer1 and watch Netflix videos up to four hours longer.

+2 hours - browsing compared to Chrome and Firefox

+4 hours - watching Netflix videos compared to Chrome and Firefox

Chrome and Firefox.

Browsing with Safari is blazing fast thanks to advanced JavaScript engine optimizations that make websites and web applications feel snappier.

Defending your online privacy and security.

Privacy and security aren’t just something you should hope for — they’re something you should expect. That’s why features to help protect your privacy and keep your Mac secure are built into Safari. For example, it’s the only browser to offer DuckDuckGo — a search engine that doesn’t track you — as a built-in option.

Private Browsing windows.

When you use Private Browsing, Safari doesn’t remember the pages you visit, your search history, or your AutoFill information. Each tab in a Private Browsing window is isolated from the others, so websites you view in one tab can’t see your cookies from websites in another tab. This helps prevent websites you're logged in to from tracking you as you browse.

Third-party cookie blocking.

The web pages you visit often leave cookies from third-party websites. These cookies can be used to track where you go on the web, target you with ads, or create a profile of your online activities. Safari was the first browser to block these cookies by default. And by default it also prevents third-party websites from leaving data in your cache, local storage, or databases.

Protection from harmful sites.

Safari helps protect you against fraudulent Internet sites and those that harbor malware — before you visit them. If a website looks suspicious, Safari prevents it from loading and warns you.

Sandboxing for websites.

Sandboxing provides built-in protection against malicious code and malware by restricting what websites can do. And because Safari runs web pages in separate processes, any harmful code you come across in one page is confined to a single browser tab, so it can’t crash the whole browser or access your data.

Surf seamlessly across all your devices.

Not only does Safari come on every Mac, it comes on every iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, too. And thanks to iCloud, your passwords, bookmarks, history, tabs, and Reading List are always up to date no matter which device you’re using.

With Tab view, the last websites you had open on your Mac are available in Safari on your iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch — and vice versa. So you can go from one device to another without having to search for the web pages you were reading.

iCloud Keychain securely stores your user names, passwords, and credit card numbers and keeps them up to date on your trusted devices. So you can easily sign in to your favorite websites and quickly make online purchases. And everything is protected with robust 256-bit AES encryption.

With Bookmarks in Safari, your favorite sites are always close at hand. Bookmark a web page on your Mac, and it automatically appears on all your iCloud-connected devices.

Save web pages you want to read later simply by adding them to your Reading List. Then view them on any of your iCloud-connected devices — even if you’re not connected to the Internet.

Built-in tools for better browsing.

New features in Safari help you surf smarter and easily manage and share what you find.

Pinned Sites.

Keep websites you visit often — like your webmail, Facebook page, or Twitter feed — open, up to date, and easily accessible by pinning them. They’ll stay active in the background, and they’ll stay put on the left side of your tab bar.

AirPlay web video.

Play video from a web page to your TV with Apple TV — without showing everything else on your desktop. Just click the AirPlay icon that appears on compatible web videos and you can watch your video on the big screen.

Mute a tab.

Want to stop the music without hunting for the tab it’s coming from? Now you can mute it right from the Smart Search field. If you’re listening to audio in one tab and another website starts to play, you can mute the one you don’t want to hear. And if what you really want is silence, you can mute all audio from your browser, too.

Spotlight suggestions.

With Spotlight built into every Mac, you’re never far from the information you want. As you type in the Smart Search field, you’ll see Spotlight suggestions from sources like Wikipedia, news sites, Maps, iTunes, movie listings, weather, stocks, and sports.

Share menu.

Share anything you come across on the web without leaving Safari. Just click the Share button, then choose how you want to send it off. Use Mail, Messages, or AirDrop or add it to a note. Tweet or post to Facebook and even include comments and locations. A single sign-on sets up sharing to Facebook and Twitter, so you only need to log in once.

Reader.

View news stories and other articles in a layout that’s optimized for easy reading. Reader lets you focus on the text without being distracted by ads. You can customize your view by selecting your font size and style, and choose Sepia and Night themes.

Mail

An inbox full of useful features.

Mail is the simple, powerful way to manage email on your Mac. It’s easy to set up and works with many popular email services like iCloud, Gmail, Yahoo, AOL, and Microsoft Exchange. Have multiple accounts? No problem. Add your accounts to Mail and you’ll be able to access all your email from one place. Use handy swipe gestures to delete messages or mark them as unread to make quick work of your correspondence. Or you can dig in with an enhanced full-screen view that lets you juggle multiple messages at a time. Mail even helps you manage your calendar and keep your contacts up to date with proactive suggestions, right from your inbox.

Messages

Say hello to the only messaging app you need.

Love iMessage on your iPhone? You'll love it on your Mac, too. Messages lets you send unlimited messages to anyone on a Mac, iOS device, or Apple Watch. Your messages can include photos, videos, documents, audio, and contacts, and you can even see when your message has been delivered and when someone’s typing a reply. With end-to-end encryption, your iMessage conversations stay safe and private. And those green SMS text messages on your iPhone? They’re also on your Mac. Because all your conversations are available across your devices, you can start a conversation on your iPhone and pick it up on your Mac.

FaceTime

Make your smile go further.

FaceTime lets you make video calls from your Mac, so you can talk, smile, and laugh with anyone on a Mac or iOS device. Catch up, hang out, and stay in touch with just a click. Simply find the person you want to see by typing their name, email address, or phone number to start a FaceTime call. You can also start a FaceTime call from Contacts, Messages, or Spotlight. When someone calls, you’ll receive a notification that you can accept, decline, reply to via Messages, or set a callback reminder. It works even if FaceTime isn’t running, so you never have to worry about making yourself available.

Calendar

An app you’ll appreciate day after day.

Keep track of your busy schedule and share it with others using Calendar. Create separate calendars — one for home, another for school, a third for work, and so on. See all your calendars in a single window or choose to see only the calendars you want. The inspector lets you add a location to your event, suggests locations as you type, provides maps and weather forecasts, and automatically alerts you when it’s time to leave. And when you use iCloud, every Calendar change you make on your Mac automatically appears on your iOS devices and Apple Watch. So no dinner dates are missed, no meeting goes unattended, and no anniversary is forgotten.

Notes

Perfect for little tasks. And big ones too.

The powerful new Notes app is more than a great way to jot down a quick thought and keep track of it for later. Now you can turn a list into a checklist in a snap. Add links, photos, map locations, and more by clicking the Share button in apps like Safari, Photos, and Maps. All the attachments you’ve added to your notes are organized in one simple view: the Attachments Browser. And thanks to iCloud, all your notes and everything in them are kept up to date across all your devices. So you can create a note on your Mac and check it on your iPhone when you’re out and about.

Install any app with ease.

The Mac App Store revolutionizes the way apps are installed on a computer — it happens in one step. Enter the same iTunes password you use to buy apps and music on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or iPod touch. Within seconds, your new app flies to Launchpad, ready to go. So you can spend more time enjoying new apps and less time installing them.

Keep your apps up to date.

Since developers are constantly improving their apps, the Mac App Store keeps track of your apps and tells you when an update is available — including OS X software updates. Update one app at a time or all of them at once, for free. You can even have your apps and OS X update automatically, so you’ll always have the latest version of every app you own.

The app you need. When you need it.

Can’t open a file you’ve downloaded or received in an email? OS X can search the Mac App Store to find the app that can open the file. Buy what you need instantly and get back to business.

Buy, download, and even redownload.

You can install apps on every Mac authorized for your personal use and even download them again. This is especially convenient when you buy a new Mac and want to load it with apps you already own.

iBooks

Always have something good to read.

iBooks is the best way to purchase, organize, and read books on your Mac. Download and read everything from classic novels to the latest page-turners. Reading is easy and intuitive — turn pages with a swipe and zoom in with a pinch. If you’re a student hitting the books, you can keep as many open as you like. When you purchase a book on your iOS device, it’s automatically available on your Mac. And when you take notes or highlight passages on your Mac, iCloud pushes them to all your devices automatically. It even remembers which page you’re on, so you can always pick up right where you left off.

iBooks.

Find something good to read. No matter where you are.

Be well read with iBooks and all its latest features. It’s included on your iOS device with iOS 9 and on your Mac with OS X Yosemite or later. So you can fill your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or Mac library with everything from the classics to the most recent best sellers. Whether you’re on the go or in for the evening, you’ll always have your favorites within reach.

More ways with words.

Reading on your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or Mac is just like reading a book. But once you get started, you’ll see it’s so much more. Turn pages with a flick on your iOS device or a two-finger swipe on your Mac trackpad. Read one page at a time, or turn your iPad on its side and view two pages at once. Read everything full screen, with no distractions, or read in white-on-black nighttime mode. Alter the look of most books by changing their text size and font. And open as many books as you like when reading on a Mac.

Heard any good books lately?

Audiobooks are just the thing when you want a story read to you. In OS X, you’ll find them in iTunes. In iOS 9, you can purchase and play audiobooks right in iBooks. They’ll appear on your library shelf just like your other books. And listening to a book is every bit as intuitive as reading one thanks to an all-new interface. You can even take your books on the road by tapping the Audiobooks icon on your CarPlay touchscreen. With iBooks for iOS, you can experience a great read in more ways than one.

With Series, your library gets a little more organized.

View your books by title, author, category, or series.
Or browse your entire library in All Books. If you have multiple books in a series, iBooks groups them together. Tap the series and it expands. You can see which books you already own and which ones are available next in the series. When you’re ready for the next book, you can purchase it right from your library.

iBooks and iCloud.

iCloud stores the stuff you care about — your music, photos, and contacts, for example — and makes it accessible from your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or Mac. iCloud even stores your books. And it doesn’t matter which device you use to buy them, because you’ll see every title you’ve purchased in your library. If you want it on your device, just tap to download it. So you can read one of your favorites on your iPhone during your morning commute, page through a few chapters of that same book on your Mac later in the day, and pick up right where you left off on your iPad at bedtime.

Auto-night theme.

If you’re reading in low light on your iPad or iPhone, iBooks for iOS automatically switches to white-on-black text on your screen. When the light improves, iBooks automatically switches back.

And the definitions.

Use your finger as a highlighter when you’re reading a book on your iOS device or Mac. Just swipe over the selected text (using the trackpad on your Mac), and it’s highlighted. Tap a highlighted section and a palette appears. Change colors, switch to underline, or add a note instantly. Then switch to the Notes view to see all your notes and highlights instantly organized in one place, making it a cinch to search or go back to the highlighted sections of your book. When you take notes or highlight passages, iCloud pushes them to all your devices automatically. And it remembers which page you’re on, so you can pick up right where you left off.

Share quotes on Facebook or Twitter.

Maybe you’re reading a hilarious take on family that’s spot on about yours. Or you come across a fact that supports the premise of your thesis. All you know is, you have to share it. With iBooks, you can share the perfect phrase directly from the page on Facebook or Twitter. You can also send a snippet via text or email.

Put PDFs in your library.

In addition to keeping all your books in one place, iBooks keeps track of your PDF files, too. User guides, business proposals, project plans — put them all in your iBooks library for easy access. When someone emails you a PDF, you can save it to iBooks. Then go to your library and tap to open it.

Multi-Touch books for iPad, iPhone, and Mac.

Experience the most amazing books you’ve ever read. These books take advantage of everything you can do on your iPad, iPhone, or Mac. They’re capable of Multi‑Touch, audio, video, and more. With Multi-Touch books, you’re no longer limited to flat images on paper. Flick or swipe through a photo gallery. Use a finger to rotate a 3D object. Watch animations spring to life. Or listen to audio commentary. You can find Multi‑Touch books — including iBooks Textbooks — in the iBooks Store. Browse categories like Food and Cooking, Arts and Entertainment, Travel, and more. Each title is like nothing you’ve ever experienced. And it’s something you won’t want to put down.

Shop iBooks.

The iBooks Store features over 2.5 million books and counting — many of them free. View what’s featured on iBooks, check out the New York Times best-seller lists, or browse by title, author, genre, or collection. Find a book you like and tap to see more details, peruse reviews, even read a free sample. Purchase a book and it downloads to your library, ready to read.

Out with the old edition. In with the new.

Books — especially textbooks — get updated for any number of reasons. Thankfully, the iBooks app supports book updates. That means if a book you purchased is republished with new or additional content, iBooks lets you know. You can download the updated version free, and it automatically replaces the older copy in your library.

Reminders

Set it and you won’t forget it.

You’ll never forget a task again with Reminders. Remind yourself to call a friend on a certain date and time, or to pick up the dry cleaning on the way home from work. You can set reminders to repeat at any interval you want. Create a reminder from almost anywhere in OS X from the Share menu, including a Safari web page, a contact, or an email. And with iCloud, reminders that you set on your Mac are available on your iOS devices and vice versa.
